Genre Research: Horror

In the horror genre, there are several common techniques and elements used to create suspense we see

Common Camera Techniques like

· Shaky Cam: Used to create a sense of chaos and disorientation, often in chase or intense scenes.

· Point of View Shots: Placing the audience in the perspective of the antagonist or victim, heightening tension and suspense.

· Dutch Angle: Tilting the camera to create a feeling of unease or disorientation.

· Extreme Close-Ups: Emphasizing certain details or expressions, intensifying the fear factor.

· Slow Tracking Shots: Building suspense and dread by slowly revealing the environment or impending danger.

Common Characteristics we see are

· "Atmosphere": Setting up eerie, tense, or foreboding environments through lighting, set design, and location.

· Suspenseful Plot: Employing unexpected twists, anticipation, and mystery to keep the audience on edge.

· Moral Ambiguity: Often involving complex characters or situations where moral lines blur, adding depth to the horror.

· Symbolism and Metaphors: Using symbolic elements to convey deeper meanings or fears.

Common Editing we see

· Jump Cuts: Creating sudden, jarring transitions to startle or unsettle the audience.

· Montages: Quick sequences of events or images used to heighten tension or provide context.

Common Sound we see

· Sound Design: Employing eerie sound effects, ambient noises, and music to build tension.

· Silence: Strategic use of silence to create anticipation and enhance scares.

· Stingers or Jumpscares: Sudden loud noises or musical cues to startle the audience.

Example Films:

· The Shining

· Hereditary

· The Exorcist

· Get Out

· The Conjuring

Elements I Like and Would Use: I appreciate the atmospheric building in horror films, especially through detailed set design and soundscapes. The use of symbolism and metaphor to explore deeper themes also intrigues me. Additionally, I find the creation of suspense and unexpected plot twists highly effective in keeping audiences engaged.

Elements I Would Not Use: While jump scares can be effective in moderation, I'm not inclined to rely solely on them as a primary scare tactic. Gratuitous gore or violence purely for shock value without serving the narrative would also not align with my preferences in the genre. Additionally, I'd aim to avoid all that.
